I have searched the internet and cannot find there is any way to add a subscript, as the stated solution of typing the underscore only works in non-math mode. If only onenote simply supports latex! Can anyone tell me how to add a subscript to the sum sign inside the math equation mode? That keyboard shortcut is for OneNote 2016 (the desktop version). It sounds like you're using the Universal app of OneNote from Windows 10. Unfortunately while there is a keyboard shortcut for superscript in that version I don't think there is one for subscript. OneNote is a feature-rich note-taking app, and it gives you a lot for free. Subscript, or mathematical operators. You can write them by hand and let OneNote tidy them into typed equations. In the Symbol box, in the Font drop-down list, select (normal text) if it isn't already selected. In the Symbol box, in the Subset drop-down list, select Superscripts and Subscripts. In the Symbol box, select the symbol you want, press Insert, and then pick Close. Keyboard shortcuts: Apply superscript or subscript.

In LaTeX, subscripts and superscripts are written using the symbols ^

, in this case the x and y exponents where written using these codes. The codes can also be used in some types of mathematical symbols, in the integral included in the example the _
is used to set the lower bound and the ^
for the upper bound. The command limits
changes the way the limits are displayed in the integral, if not present the limits would be next to the integral symbol instead of being on top and bottom. (see the reference guide)

Subscripts and superscripts can be nested and combined in various ways. When nesting subscripts/superscripts, however, remember that each command must refer to a single element; this can be a single letter or number, as in the examples above, or a more complex mathematical expression collected in braces or brackets.
